An amazing and inspiring weekend Makhaza branch had. It was an excellent opportunity for volunteers, tutors and learner reps to participate in core operational planning and goal setting for the year 2014. . Present were more than 30 participants from different grades and tutors and they all had a chance to discuss the decision making, planning and electing the branch committee.
On Friday we looked back from the year 2013. The morning started off with an introduction and the group explaining what their expectations of the weekend are, we then discussed what happened in 2013 and then we ended with looking at what Makhaza branch is doing well, what challenges we are facing, what IkamvaYouth Makhaza branch is offering learners and the community and what we can do to improve the programme.
On Saturday the election took place and everyone had a chance to vote for the different nominees. The nomination and election process were very democratic and the nominees had to explain to the group why they were best suited for the different portfolios. The different portfolios were Tutoring, Volunteer Coordination, Career Guidance, Media, Image and Expression, Khan Academy and Computer Literacy, Health and Life Skills, Mentoring and Alumni. All the head of different portfolio had the chance to discuss the key issues and solutions for each portfolio. An action plan was drafted for each portfolio and when the goals should be reached and by whom. Mandisi Gladile, a tutor who is serving for the second time in Makhaza branch committee says, “The weekend was really informative and made me realise the value IkamvaYouth adds not only to the learners but also the community and I feel really inspired for the things that we have planned for 2014.”
Athandile, a grade 9 learner, says that “I have learnt that you don’t have to hold back any ideas or views that you have, you must voice them out. I have taken away with me the spirit of working together as a team, through that spirit, nothing can bring IkamvaYouth down.”
On the 15th and 16th March 2014, Masi hosted its annual SPW. Duing this weekend 20 learners, tutors and staff members came together to plan the year ahead taking into consideration all that has happened at the branch and all the hurdles that we must still overcome. Shuvai Finos (Nyanga Branch Coordinator) and Siphelele Madabula (Nyanga Branch Assistant) facilitated and ran the SPW.
The first part of the weekend was to trace the steps of the branch via a timeline that was done by the learners in collaboration with the tutors. Thereafter, the various challenges and burning issues of the branch were tabled out with the sole purpose of finding the more sustainable and realistic solutions going forward. After a very enlightening day of brain power and fun, the first day of SPW was done.
Day two began with was became the highlight of the weekend, the election of a new Branch Comm. It was interesting to see just how much potential in vested within each Masinite as they all stood and offered themselves to serve the Branch and be a beackon of hope in the community. After the excitement, it was back to work for us all. At this point, the Masinites had to lay out the year plan for the branch, ensuring that it was realistic and speacific. After a very tiring two days, SPW was done and all the attendees agreed that although they realised that there is still a lot of work that needs to be done, they were all very excited to see the branch grow. The beginning of the year is always an exciting time for IY branches as we usher the previous year’s Matrics into post-school opportunities, welcome new learners and tutors and together decide on the goals and outcomes of the new year. On the 8th and 9th of March 2014, Nyanga branch held its annual Strategic Planning Weekend (SPW). Staff members, learners and volunteers came together for 2 days to discuss the year ahead and what nyanganites should do to make 2014 a success.
This year’s SPW was different from previous ones because the majority of learners who attended are new to IY Nyanga, having started at the beginning of the year. Furthermore, the weekend was facilitated by our Makhaza Branch Coordinator, Zukile, in line with IY’s value of collaboration and peer-to-peer support.
Over the 2 days, nyanganites worked in small groups to identify challenges faced by the branch, and come up with solutions to these challenges. On the second day, the team elected the 2014 branch committee who shall work together with the rest of the branch to make sure the branch accomplishes all things outlined at the SPW. Masiphumelele Strategic Weekend Planning
We held our annual Strategic Planning Weekend on 13-14th April 2013 at the Community Hall and local Library, respectively. We had 3 tutors and 41 learners in attendance on the first day; while we had 24 learners on the second day. Those who attended and participated, displayed understanding and knowledge of Ikamva Youth as well as willingness to effect change. The two days was filled with a lot of programmes, activities and games> On saterday, we looked at our vaulues, mission and vision, history of Masi branch its (timeline) then later on moved on to vision and time management. Lunch time came, and after that we focused on the swot analysis and looked at what the promblems a we face as a branch, our learners voiced themsleves and expressed their concerns but they excellently came up with solutions with the help fronm our tutors as well.
We closed our Saturday session on a high note everyone sharing what they enjoyed and learnt for the day and checking out.
On Sunday we focused on our portfolios and we elected the Masi branch com. All the portfolios were filled up with two members or more. The learners in each portfolio discussed what it entails to be in that particular portifolio and what is required from them, they successfully accomplished the task and they came up with great ideas with the help from other learners.
In closing, the SPW was a resounding success, having achieved its objectives and aims as well as forging good relations between the organisation, it’s learners and partners. We are incredibly excited about the future of the branch and the immense potential which is evident in the lives of the learners. On the 20th and 21st of April, Umlazi held its first ever SPW. Attendance was good as the event was attended by over 20 volunteers and 4 learners from across the grades.
Saturday kicked off with a little activity to get the blood flowing and energy levels a little higher, the ground rules and expectation were outlined by the team and put up on the walls. After we spoke about the Timeline of IkamvaYouth, the team broke up into groups and we got into the values discussion. Each group of 4-5 had one value to look into; they discussed what it meant to them and how it shows up at the branch.
The remainder of Saturday was spent going over the current issues at the branch. Everyone had a chance to put their view/concern on paper and stick it on our working wall. We also managed to cover overviews of the various portfolios and their functions.
Day 2 saw the team going through the budget and nominating and voting for the 2013 portfolio heads. Once the portfolio heads were elected, they each had a group work with them to discuss the objectives for the year for each respective portfolio. After lunch, each team presented their work to the team and took questions from everyone.
That saw us come to the end of our very first SPW. We are looking towards building on the energy of the event, especially the new tutors who say the experience was inspiring and informative for them.
Everyone seemed to be very amped throughout the weekend; the energy was good and productive. The team managed to cover everything we had hoped to go through with the participants, and quite a lot of ideas and objectives were put on the table. Now it is time to put all our ideas into action.

The Chesterville branch held its Strategic Planning Weekend (SPW) on the weekend of the 16 & 17 March. The weekend was a great success given that a new Branch Committee was voted in and plans were put in place by the end of the weekend. Present at the event were tutors, learner representatives and staff of IY.
It was exciting to see how learners and tutors have taken ownership of the programmes. There was clarification of all portfolios and what role the portfolio heads who would be voted in would play. They were enthusiastic about putting plans in place for the year and learning from what either went wrong or didn’t happen last year. It was helpful to have experiences to learn from and to see that people had actually seen the light and they knew what was needed to improve this year. Commitment was highlighted as a vital thing in seeing these plans through this year. There was a lot of hardwork and fun at the same time.
