On the 13 March 2011 the Ikamva Youth Nyanga Branch hosted its first tesing day for 2011
Desmond Tutu HIV Foundation partnered up with the Nyanga Branch in educating the learners about the importance of knowing your staus and being healthy, a talk was given by Sister Liz of the Tutu testers about the importance of preventing ones self from the HIV virus and why it is imporatnt that learners should test and know their staus early as possible
One of Ikamva Youth’s goal is to assist learners to lead healthy and responsible lives through knowing their status early and taking the necessary procautions when they know
The Tutu testers came with their mobile testing unit and openned up time during the Saturday tutoring session for a group of 6 leaners at a time, to go and test while learners and tutors continued with the normal tutoring for the day
The learners were encouraged to test but also told that testing is ones choice and no one will be forced to test if they dont want to, as Sis Liz mentioned the testing is “voluntary”
Our next tesing day will be held after our Winter School in July!
Waiting for their results after the health screening, TB, BMI, and HIV!
Now we know our status, Do You know yours?

This past Saturday the fifteen students that had the highest percentage of attendance had an excursion to watch Turn It Loose. Turn It Loose is one of the many great films that is now playing in the Nu Metro theater at the Waterfront in the Encounters Film Festival.
The film that we got to see was about the 2007 Red Bull B Boy Championship in Johannesburg. Turn It Loose told the story of five different break dancers that made there way to Johannesburg in 2007 to compete in the world championship of break dancing. Our learners loved watching this documentary as it was up beat and had great dancing. Turn It Loose will be playing again on the 28 of August if you are interested in watching this film.
IkamvaYouth Nyanga has ben fortunate enough to receive, from a very generous donation, the Answer Series. These books have already made a big impact on our learners. The books ranging from all subjects, English, Mathematics, Physical Science and Life Science will expand our learners knowledge. We are grateful for this donations that will help our present and future learners.
From IkamvaYouth Nyanga Thank You Answer Series!!!!
Learners from IkamvaYouth Nyanga recently had the opportunity to visit various locations around Cape Town. The first stop was the Iziko Museum where the students viewed and learned about the artwork in the gallery. They then went to the Iziko Annexe where art work created by learners from schools around Cape Town is on display and were given a basic lesson in art. Then using basic materials such as cardboard, markers, crayons, and paint, the learners created their own pieces of art. Many of their creations touched on peace, happiness, and unity. The next destination was Kirstenbosch gardens where the students learned about the ecology and biodiversity of South Africa. Although the rain prevented the learners from experiencing the beautiful gardens, they enjoyed learning about the different South African biomes and the process of photosynthesis. We also viewed and studied several specimens of plants. The last stop was the Two Oceans Aquarium on the Waterfront. The Nyanga learners were able to view a vast array of aquatic life including penguins, frogs, sharks, and the poisonous puffer fish. They all enjoyed learning about each of the animals and watching them in their respective environment. Overall, the learners and the volunteers alike had a wonderful time on these excursions and would like to thank each of the venues for their generous hospitality.
