This last weekend Nyanganites got together for a highly successful Strategic Planning Weekend, SPW. Learners, volunteers and staff put their heads together and mapped out the year plan for 2013.
Nyanga learners showed that they are youngsters with a vision for their branch and are more than capable of taking their future into their own hands. Together, they outlined the challenges they currently face at the branch, and then came up with solutions to those challenges. The volunteers also brought their best to the session, guiding the learners and assisting them in expressing themselves and working on the different issues that came up during the weekend.
On the last day of the SPW, Nyanganites elected their 2013 branch committee, with some Nyanganites self-nominating and motivating why they wanted to be part of certain portfolios. It was highly gratifying to see the learners and volunteers confidently speaking out and outlining their own strong points.

The weekend consisted of planning for 2013 as well as an election to choose the new branch committee as well as choosing the different heads of the different portfolios. Present were more than 30 learners from different grades and tutors and they all had a chance to discuss the decision making, planning and electing the branch committee.
The Main goal of our SPW was to elect a branch committee (in charge of roles and portfolios) and for new volunteers (grade12 from last year returning) to take ownership of programme and become part of the management team. It was also a great weekend for the leaner reps and tutors to get to know each other better.
On Saturday we discussed the year program and we also had a look back at what happened in 2012. The morning started off with an introduction and the group explaining what their expectations of the weekend will be, we then discussed what happened in 2012 and then we ended with looking at what IkamvaYouth is doing well, what challenges we are facing, what IkamvaYouth is offering learners and the community and what we can do to improve the programme. We had a lot of first time branch committee members, but the rest of the group made them all feel included and welcome.
On Sunday the election took place and everyone had a chance to vote for the different nominees. The nomination and election process were very democratic and the nominees had to explain to the group why they were best suited for the different portfolios. The different portfolios were Tutoring, Volunteer Coordination, Career Guidance, Media, Image and Expression, Computer Literacy, Health and Life Skills and Alumni.
The different portfolio members also had to discuss their portfolios and present a plan of action for the group and will need to present this plan of action to all the Ikamvanites at Makhaza. They had to present their goals, when the goals should be reached and by whom. Emihle, a grade 8 learner and newly appointed portfolio member said that the weekend was a dream come true and that she enjoyed the interaction and discussions that took place and that she is really happy and proud for being chosen as part of the health and life skills portfolio.
Mandisi Gladile, a tutor says, “the weekend was really informative and made me realise the value IkamvaYouth adds not only to the learners but also the community and I feel really inspired for the things that we have planned for 2013.”

It is our second Monday at the Hearth and Soul Farm here in Stanford, Capetown, and the NSPW continues. Ikamvanites are over the hill with joy and the IY partners are amazed and curious to know more. We have representatives from Capitec, Tsiba, Sozo Foundation, Learning Trust, IkamvaYouth board and other supporting individuals. The day started with a super fantastic exercise from Ilana, and then Mignon got us engaged with the understanding of the IkamvaYouth Vision and model. We had a team task that left everyone very excited. Ikamvanites and partners were divided into five groups of eight each, and were provided with materials to build a stage were all members of the group could stand and make a presentation. Having learnt the role of teamwork, and the great value of bringing together resources and ‘expertise’, all participants worked together to build one stage, and were not keen to work separately. The stage was finished in time, and all of the over 40 participants were on stage, singing melodiously mentioning all they had learnt in the week. The lessons learnt from the task, is how to work as a team and how each of our contributions are vital to reaching our goal. After that we had a wonderful lunch from our great chef and then hard-core stuff started with the strategy ideas being brought up in the room. We were aiming for the sky, and none of us felt like they were being left behind to this amazing journey that is about to start. The results of this strategy session left everyone eager to start working the following day and committed to reaching the 2030 goal.
Great Ideas are born from nothing.
25 learners and volunteers from Nyanga joined the branch co-ordinator and branch assistant for a memorable Strategic Planning Weekend. The SPW is a pivotal event for every IY branch as some of the branch’s volunteers and learners come together with the staff to map the way forward for the year. This year’s SPW was attended by 25 learners and volunteers and the branch co-ordinator and assistant. We were also fortunate to be joined by the WC regional co-ordinator Liesel Bakker and IY Director, Joy Olivier for our SPW.
Bomi Popi, one of the Nyanga volunteers said, ‘I’m looking forward to mapping the way forward for Nyanga, and measuring our progress next time we have such a meeting’
The weekend also provided an opportunity to the learners, tutors and staff to get to know each other better and Xola Booi, a Grade 12 learner representative said, ‘we are here to work together as learner s and tutors and share positive ideas’.

On the weekend of 31 March and 1 April IYKZN hosted it’s 2nd SPW at the Chesterville branch. We had the priviledge of being joined by our National Coordinator Zamo Shongwe and our Director and Co-Founder Joy Olivier, who was also present at last years SPW. Excitement and enrgy filled the centre as we were joined by tutors from both our branches – Umlazi and Chesterville. Unlike last year where the SPW took place after one of our Saturday School sessions, we had a full 2 days to spend planning 2012 and going over 2011 with those that joined during the year as well as addressing ways of improvement that could be implemented.
A mixture of new and old tutors gave us a chance to discuss the growth of IYKZN over the years and all our achievements till now. New tutors and learner reps got a chance to contribute their thoughts and participate in an active conversation about IY’s plans for 2012 while learning from those who have been present over the years. This meant that most of day 1 was spent around understanding IY and our mission and values as well as recognising our achievements. New members also had the chance to contribute towards our budget, enforcing our open door policy to all those present.
Day 2 began with our previous Branch Comm going through each of their portfolios and the success of 2011 within each portfolio. Thereafter we had a chance to listen to motivations by group members who were present and interested in forming 2012’s new Branch Comm. Which was very heartwarming as a few learner reps also stood up and shared their interests. Though there are now 2 branches, seems like both Branch Comms are a passionate group of people who are committed to passing forward love and knowledge to all future Ikamvanites. Overall, our SPW was a great success filled with love and laughter as we used fun and games to bond and shared our thoughts in an inviting circle of acceptance filled with individuals with a common love and goal for Ikamva KZN. Both the Ebony Park and Ivory Park branches in Gauteng came together on Saturday the 17th of March from 12:30pm to 3:30 pm. The reason for the afternoon Strategic Planning Session was to introduce IkamvaYouth to all new volunteers and also brainstorm on how we can improve the IkamvaYouth experience for the learners and the tutors.
We had over 50 volunteers attending, including the Branch Committee members for both branches, and the topics that were discussed that afternoon were:
- What can we do to make the tutoring experience better for both the learner and the tutor?
- What ideas do we have for the Matrics given that they cannot come regularly on Saturdays?
- In what ways can we show some tutor appreciation?
- How do we improve the career guidance programme?
- Do you have any ideas for side-projects (either: tutor or learner-driven)?
One of the volunteers Paul Khokololo said, “The planning session was such an informative session and would definitely help the tutors to become better at helping the learners. Participating and working together to make suggestions and additions to IkamvaYouth has been an awesome experience.”
