Lets compare…
More than a week has passed since Ikamvanites along with their fellow Grade 12’s received their matric results. Whilst Ikamvanites are busy with registration and sorting out their accommodation etc we have taken the time to make some stark comparisons with the results achieved by our Ikamvanites and those achieved by the schools that they attend.
This is the first comparison of individual schools compared with IkamvaYouth’s results, and is for the Western Cape province. Firstly, this comparison helps to highlight that the IkamvaYouth pass rate in the Western Cape is 21% higher than the national average and 12% higher than the provincial average.
These figures are even more impressive when one takes into account that the provincial average is based on all schools, including well-resourced schools demonstrating 100% pass rates. If we isolate the schools attended by Ikamvanites (under-resourced schools), the difference is revealed even more starkly.
In every single case the IkamvaYouth pass rates far exceed the school pass rates. For instance, the majority of Makhaza learners attend Chris Hani Secondary School which performed poorly, with only 44% of matric students passing. However, all the Ikamvanites that attend Chris Hani passed. Such a disparity between school averages and IkamvaYouth’s results speak for themselves.
In addition if we break down these results into Bachelor, Diploma, and Higher Certificate passes, IkamvaYouth triumphs again by exceeding both the national and provincial averages. Furthermore the same pattern is displayed when comparing to individual school results; IkamvaYouth’s 37% BA pass rate smashes Chris Hani’s 11%.
So, when these learners are directly compared to the local schools, and compared directly within their context they are achieving overwhelmingly good grades. They are breaking the cycle they are escaping the trap that so many youth fall into because they fail to get that academic and social support that they need.
Please have your say about these results and comparisons.

Today ikamvanites attended a memorial service at UWC to celebrate the life of Nomzamo Kali, who was from the Makhaza Class of 2005.
Nomzamo was a learner at Manyano High School when she became an ikamvanite, and she went on to achieve great things. She enrolled in 2006 at UWC at the Faculty of Economic and Management Sciences, studying information systems. In 2010 she moved on to Honours, and was to become a Masters student in 2011.
Thobela Bixa, an IkamvaYouth board member and classmate of Nomzamos at IkamvaYouth in 2005, gave a heartfelt speech. He urged those in attendance to continue to realise what Nomzamo stood for, and give back to their communities and assist disadvantaged youth to access tertiary education.
University officials appealed to lecturers and students in attendance to continue to strive to produce and be students of Nomzamo’s calibre, and the president of the SRC mourned the nation’s loss of a role model. Nomzamo was not only a high achiever, but also did not wait to give back, and was doing it right from when she left school.
Nomzamo was a talented, beautiful, smart and caring person who inspired many people. IkamvaYouth sends our deep condolences to Nomzamo’s family and friends.
On Saturday 22nd January 2011 the IkamvaYouth branches are opening their doors and welcoming all interested learners, volunteers, and parents.
The Open Day is a chance for learners to meet other Ikamvanites who have been with the programme for the last year. They can talk with other learners, with volunteer tutors, with ex Ikamvanites who are now attending Universities, and with IkamvaYouth staff. Prospective Ikamvanites can get an idea about what we do, why we do it, and how we do it. A short film will be shown as well and give a glimpse into the lives of previous Ikamvanites.
We want you all to come along and be part of the day, and apply to be part of IkamvaYouth. The results we have achieved since establishment are amazing and 2010 matric results reflect this; IkamvaYouth’s learners, all of whom attend township public schools, achieved an 87% pass rate, with 52% Bachelor passes and 38% diploma passes. 36 distinctions were awarded.
If you want to take charge of your future and really make a change to your life and others come along to find out more. Application forms will be available to fill in on the day with help from IkamvaYouth, but can also be collected prior to or after the day from your nearest IkamvaYouth branch. You can download the application and Indemnity forms here. application_form_jan_2011.pdf indemnity_form_january_2011_1.pdfbut first please read the Information for learners document: infoforlearners_jan2011.pdf
This is also a great way for new volunteers to meet the learners and find out about the organisation. All are welcome, from any background. To be a tutor you do not need to be a teacher or trained tutor, we just want people with matric and enthusiastic about helping young people. Please see our tutor page on the site and the application form https://ikamvayouth.org.www518.jnb1.host-h.net/programmes/tutoring/information-volunteers.
The IkamvaYouth team look forward to seeing many new and excited faces on Saturday morning!

It gives us great pleasure to report on the 2010 matric results for the Ivory Park branch of IkamvaYouth. Our first ever matric group benefitted tremendously from the collective efforts of a great group of volunteers through the countless hours of tutoring, career guidance and mentoring. The end result is that these Ikamvanites achieved a remarkable 94% Matric Pass Rate and 82% of the class of 2010 are eligible to access tertiary education this year.
We’re celebrating these results for so many reasons not least of which is confirmation once more of the replicability and effectiveness of the IkamvaYouth model. But perhaps even more importantly, these results show what is possible when a group of dedicated individuals intent on making a positive difference get together with minimal resources but bucket-loads of commitment and enthusiasm. Hats off to all of you who contributed last year and especially to our regular volunteers as your contribution will be felt for many years to come.
There are also individual achievements to be celebrated, and we congratulate Brighton Dube for scoring an incredible 5 distinctions and being awarded the KPMG Bursary for his Accountancy studies this year. Equally impressive is Matthew Mlahleki who arrived at IkamvaYouth with 43% for Maths and 45% for Science but matriculated with 5 B’s (including Maths and Science). We expect Matthew to be studying electrical engineering at Wits this year (we are awaiting final confirmation from the university). Overall it is not just the pass-rate that pleases us but also the quality of the passes with 59% of our group attaining bachelor level passes and 23% diploma level passes.
Once again, thank you to all of you who played a part in this success (big or small) and we hope you feel proud of what you have helped to make a reality. We’re especially grateful for the contributions from our supporters: Datatec, Transnet, Hatch, Resolve, Nashua Mobile, Schneider-Electric and Calvary Methodist Church and we look forward to what 2011 has in store.
We will be holding an Open Day for interested learners and parents on 22 January with final applications due on 5 February. The first tutoring sessions are due to begin again on 12 Feb. Sign up here to receive weekly schedule updates from the Ebony/Ivory Park branch.

Although the Careers Indaba happened *ages* ago, it was quite a crazy time for us and although we posted these pics and clips, we forgot to share the stories and news of what ended up being a really awesome day.
Collaborating with Equal Education was brilliant, and as a result, the day was bigger and better than the first Indaba we held in Khayelitsha in 2009. We leveraged contacts and lessons learned from the original two-week-long Indaba held at the Masiphumelele Library, to ensure that learners had a wide array of opportunities to interact with people from different institutions, career fields, organisations and companies. Have a look at the programme to see who was there. (careersindaba.program-2.pdf).

Aziza Mdee from Equal Education and IkamvaYouth interns Chris Fan and Miriam Rodriquez worked hard to ensure that we were organised and ready. The response was fantastic, and learners from all over Khayelitsha and many other communities streamed through the doors. Ms Makhoba, a teacher, inspired the audience, and Amanda Van der Vyver took everyone through the “Careers Exploration for Dummies” (career_exploration_for_dummies-1.pdf) booklet she created to help learners get the most out of the day.
Volunteers from various fields (from law, to medicine, fashion, engineering, hospitality services and the police service) were available for learners to interact with one-on-one, and many great connections were made. Some of these even lead to work experience opportunities!
We’re very grateful to everyone who made this very special day happen, and are looking forward to doing it all again in 2011!
