Thobela entered the IkamvaYouth programme in 2004 at the Makhaza branch in Khayelitsha as a grade 11 learner. Since matriculating he has been a committed volunteer and has served on the Makhaza branch committee for several years. He graduated from the University of Cape Town with BSc (Honours) from UCT, and is currently completing his Masters in Chemistry, also at UCT, doing Cancer Research. He has been awarded several academic honours, featuring on the Dean's merit list at the University of Cape Town in 2006 and 2007. He was awarded the Mellon Mays Undergraduate Fellowship in 2009/10 which afforded him the opportunity to attended Summer School at William's College in the United States. He also completed an internship with GlaxoSmithKline in the UK. He was recently awarded the David and Elaine Potter Foundation fellowship and joined IkamvaYouth's board of directors in 2010.
