MIE was a programme developed by learners for learners. IkamvaYouth events such as the prize-giving ceremonies and lab launches provided the opportunity for learners to perform their poetry, song and dance. We found that many ikamvanites have extraordinary talents in the creative arts, with limited opportunities to express themselves in this way. By including creative workshops in our holiday programmes, creating a book of learners photography and poems, establishing an annual talent show and photography exhibition and taking learners on excursions (most learners have never been to the theatre, an art gallery or the cinema), MIE provides important and new opportunities to unleash talent. The arts are a vital part of any holistic education, and the impact of these opportunities on our learners' self-esteem is clearly evident.
